I concure. If you are dead set on using RH5.2 then consider getting the
source tree for your kernel. What I eventually did was install the
kernel source into a different location (ie not /usr/src/linux), and
that fixed the problems.
I found that kernel compiles didn't work with the kernel source from the
APC 5.2 cd.
