Just make sure you've got a

   nameserver 127.0.0.1

line in your /etc/resolv.conf

then add the appropriate lines to /etc/hosts

then make sure your /etc/nsswitch.conf file contains the line

   hosts:      files nisplus nis dns

to set the order it checks hostnames in..

If you've got the DNS server running, all should be well.

Try by pinging www.microsoft.com, which you of course added as 127.0.0.1 ;)
