Greetings,
Under OS/2 in config.sys you need to set the parameter:
SET USE_HOSTS_FIRST=1
So you PC looks at the name / IP address in the hosts file 1st.
Those annoying banner sites are listed as 127.0.0.1 & are made null & void
:)
Perhaps somebody can tell us what the command / config is under Linux?

I think that /etc/hosts should do the same thing form you. Not 100% sure,
but am sure that someone here will let me know if I gave you bad info.
