All fixed. With the help of another list and a Web page out there, I used
the VesaFB mode in 2.2.9 (and other kernels) and a standard SVGA server
with a slighgtly custom XF86Config, and it now works in pristine 1024 by
768 mode.

Now, if only xterm would take heed of that xterm*font: 15x9 I put in my
.Xdefaults file, I would be happy.

It is great how a 'shutdown -h' powers the machine off after you mumble the
appropriate magic incantation ...
