Hi,
I've used W95/98 as gateway for lan at home. Sygate is the best one I've us=
ed.
Very easy to install, works great and miniman configuration required. Anoth=
er
one I've tried is WinGate. It gives you more control (eg: map port for icq,
irc ..etc) However, it require more effort to configure server and clients.
yuk!
The RedHat 5.2 box I'm running now is using IP forward, and ipfwdm for
firewall. Installation is easy, seting up firewall rules isn't too hard aft=
er
read the man page. It's flexible and don't require much configuration at
client end.
For effectiveness, I reckon they pretty much the same. If you just want set=
up
a gateway for simple lan, sygate is good enough. However, you have to buy i=
t
to use it. On other hand, if you want more security and control, linux is a
good choice. And best of all, it's free.
I haven't tried W98se as gateway, but I guess shouldn't be too much differe=
nt
from W95/98.
Hope this helps.
