Censorship debate tonight
After a lengthy delay due to the tax package and a parliamentary
recess, the Broadcasting Services Amendment (Online Services) Bill 1999
is likely to be debated tonight at 8:00pm.
If you haven't already phoned your MP to voice your opinion, please do
it today. If you have called your MP, consider whether you should be
re-phoning them to remind them of your stance on the issue. If it's
like to affect your vote at the next election, be sure to point that out.
If you don't know what it's about, spend a few minutes at
http://www.efa.org.au/Campaigns/99.html and/or
http://slash.dotat.org/~newton/senate, and/or http://rene.efa.org.au
This bill will affect you, along with every other Internet user in the
country. It will make Internet access more difficult to use, more
expensive and slower. It will never achieve its aim of keeping offensive
material away from children, it will only make it more difficult (but
by no means impossible) for adults to access that which is acceptable for
adults.
Regards,
- mark
