AUTOMOUNT, AUTOFS and AMD

This message is from my other half (rod@videocam.net.au). As only one
us have a subscription to the list, this is a forward of his message:

Dumb question time.

I've recently been looking at ways to automount our CDrom drives, NFS
file shares and SAMBA file shares, but have gotten myself horribly
confused with the relevent programs (information overload ???)

Anyway, can someone please explain in simple terms the differences
between AUTOMOUNT, AUTOFS & AMD.
For example, are these programs related ?
How, when, where, and why are each of them used ?

Will any one of these do what I want, or do I need to use
all three ?

So far, about the only thing I've managed to successfully do
is use 'automount' to mount the CD drives.

I'm not really after detailed instructions on how to use these
programs as I know this can be found in the relevent doc files -
My confusion is more related to the fact that AMD and automount
_appear_ to be two methods of doing the same thing, and if this
is the case, which should I be using, and why?

Hopefully someone can help

Thanks,
Rod.
