I think you should try doing a: cat /proc/sound 
This will show you what is installed.

Most likely you'll have to use /dev/dsp and /dev/sequencer to play sound.
TURN DOWN YOUR SPEAKERS
Try a cat somewavfile > /dev/dsp

You should hear the wav but the speed of play may be wrong, which is ok.
If you can hear sound doing that then all is fine.
