linux boxen recognising win98 boxen problem

hello:)
i have a linux box that i am trying to connect to a win98 box, so that i
can samba them, with the linux box being gateway to the web, as it has
ppp setup nicely:)
but i CANNOT make them see each other..yet they can when both are win98
(one is dual boot)

i have configured the linux box with:
hosts:
192.168.0.1 sagan loghost
192.168.0.2 hal #windows
127.0.0.1 localhost
route:
default gateway 192.168.0.1
interface eth0
netwrk address 192.168.0.0
netmask 255.255.255.0

/sbin/ifconfig/eth0

hal, win98, has

IP Address
  Specify an IP Address
  IP Address: 192.168.0.2
  Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway
  192.168.0.1
DNS Configuration
  Enable DNS
  Host name: hal
  DNS Server search order: 192.168.0.1
WINS Configuration
   Disabled.

can ping sagan from within sagan (192.168.0.1), and hal within hal
(192.168.0.2)
winipcfg recognises the tcp/ip under the ethernet card parameters listed
above.

now, as sagan is dual boot win98/linux, (until we can resolve this samba
thang), we have tested the network peer to peer win98....under netbeui
and ipx protocols, we can network easily.

so, any ideas????????
