This is you biggest problem.
A lot has changed since the 2.0.x kernels given with the APC version of
redhat. Many utilities need to be upgraded such as binutils and more. Have
a look in /usr/src/linux-2.2.9/Documentaion/Changes (or whereever you
installed the kernel). This lists what version of the utilties you need.
Your best be is to download them from netcraft
(ftp://ftp.netcraft.com.au/pub/)
there (hopefully still) is a kernel2.2 directory which has all the files
required to go from 2.0.x to 2.2.x
