The gimp

I have installed the gimp from the Debian 2.1 4 cd set on my Cx486DX4 -100 , 
16MB
machine and it doesn't run at all well.  Photoshop 3.0.5 works very well even 
with    40MB files open which leads me to think that the gimp or linux isn't 
configured properly for this machine.  I have conpiled the kernel 2.2.6 
properly as far as I can see.  I am about to try to configure it from the 
source code and see what happens.
