best way to "tame the cat" is to use either "more" or "less".
they "more or less" do the same thing (sorry), less allows a little more functionality than more.
eg
$> less foo.txt
then within less, use can use your space key for a new page, enter key for nextline 'b' key for
previous page. etcetc
try more --help for info or even man more.
