So the HP printer is emulating a UNIX workstation running lpd
with a remote printer attached.

Since the HP is emulating a remote printer, "remote" would be
the correct choice.
The set up looks like:
Names: lp
Spool directory: /var/spool/lpd/lp
File limit: 0
Remote host: hp-5-1.r710.pulteney.ntce.printer.adelaide.edu.au
Remote queue: lp
Input fileter: *auto* - PostScript
The name of my remote host is the sort of thing you get in big
networks. You should put the DNS name of 192.134.115.199 here.

lpq may very well shed light into that black hole.
BTW, SMB stands for "server message block" the file and print
protocol invented by IBM and now used by Microsoft. You
would use it to print to a printer attached to a computer
running Windows for Workgroups or Windows 9?|NT with printer
sharing running.
I agree that the word choice makes it difficult to configure
a printer -- so when you are a bit more experienced, please
download the printtool source code and add some polish.
