/AutoPPP/ and diald

The diald chat script activates ppp by providing login and password
at the login prompt.

My ppp server uses pap-security only, and I connect with the following:

pppd /dev/ttyS1 lock modem defaultroute  user XXX    \
        connect "chat -v '' ATZ OK ATdt-XXX CONNECT"

The client's ppp noise tells the unix server to start pppd instad of
login.
With the same chat script, diald does not start the local pppd so the
modem
connects and both systems sit there waiting for the other to initiate
pppd :-)

How do I get /AutoPPP/ and "chat -v '' ATZ OK ATdt-XXX CONNECT"
to work with diald.
