The original concept for Ethernet was that each *machine* would
have a fixed Ethernet address, and so all machines with multiple
Ethernet interfaces would have the same address for each interface.
For example (following from Matthew's comment), the router would
have the same MAC address on both the left and the right ethernet.
This would work even if the router was in fact a bridge.
