ok.. so you're suggesting that the mail in /var/spool/mail/??? has been read,
but not deleted.
What if all the mail in the mailbox had NEVER been read, somebody sent me a 4M
email attachment, and pop3 said 0 messages waiting. Because that's what's
happened to me, twice.
