Have a look on freshmeat - there was a program on there that I saw that
does what you are looking for. It deletes read mail from a users spool
if it is older than its threshold. It warns the users to save their
mail first, however. Could do the trick.

Serach for "mail spool" and you will get a couple of programs that
appear to suit your need :-)
