/var/spool/mail

Hi,
I have check through the /var/spool/mail directory and found that users
have mail of over 10MB stored under their name.  When I asked them to
retrieve their mail, there is no new mails.  Why is that the spool is
still keeping their old mails?  Is there any way for me to reduce that
amount of space?
