modems and fluoros

I hope this isn't too distant from core linux concerns, but....

Every time I turn on my kitchen light (a fluoro) the modem
loses the connection -- and then I can't send e-mail to this
e-mail list. [That makes the problem relevant to this list!]

Does anyone happen to have a good understanding of how
this happens and how to cure it?
In view of the triviality of the matter, and the fact that it's
probably not of wide interest, please respond directly to me, if at all.
