X Windows / monitor failure

Hello,
I have just installed Redhat 5.2 and am having problems with my monitor
and X windows.
For information, my video card has the ET6000 chip, monitor is a Samtron
sc-528uxl (both recognised under Xconfigurator)
Approximately 50% of the time typing startx would cause my monitor to
freak out - become sort of 'switched off' powered down, and unable to
work until whole system rebooted. I have no bios power management
working. The other 50% of the time everything worked great, and leaving
X windows no problem.
Upon changing /etc/inittab to id:5:initdefault: (to start X
automatically) I can now enter X windows successfully 100% of the time.
Shutting down is another story. 100% of the time the monitor crashes
upon typing shutdown.
Can someone please advise:
1. How can i fix this?
2. Is it a big deal, or can I just ignore it and keep rebooting until
things work.
Thanks
Jim Phillips
