You could try the Linux Software Map.  There are pointers, downloads, web
interfaces at:

http://www.execpc.com/~lsm/

"man -k" and "whatis" also work surprisingly well for me :)

Being something of a newbie to redhat, I do not know what the rpm tools
offer in this area, but I imagine it would have facilities like this too.

P.S. RedHat Sparc works great on my SLC - I'm using it as a XTerminal.  Just
*had* to tell someone that.
