I tend to leave the original kernel where it is, and copy the new one to a
new file, like mylinux or something similar. Then add a new stanza to
/etc/lilo.conf for the new kernel.
One thing to be wary of (caught me out), is if you are toying with
kernels, and you make a minor change and decide to just copy the kernel
file over the last one, *you must rerun lilo*. If you don't it will not
boot. You don't have to edit lilo.conf, just run /sbin/lilo and you should
be set.
